DECIDE: A Full Enterprise Simulation

A Management Development Program in Three Formats

The Overview:

DECIDE is an award-winning simulation that shows managers precisely how their decisions affect the bottom line as it increases their ability to identify and control risks.  It is the core experiential learning tool that drives three targeted programs now available from The Thiagi Group. Each program moves managers from silo thinking to cross-functional strategic management in a format geared to their experience level.

All of the programs correlate to the challenges and goals of the corporate sponsor. They include relevant business cases, tons of activities, targeted lectures, and analytical tools applied in a fast-paced learning environment driven by the DECIDE simulation.

A rich array of multi-media resources support and deepen learning as teams manage fictitious companies. Participants learn and immediately use new analytical models and quantitative skills to support their decisions. They see the impact of their decisions on every facet of the enterprise.

The programs differ in format and content to better engage participants at various levels of management. They also provide flexibility. You may want to gather high potential new hires and rising managers in one place, giving them an opportunity to interact with senior management. Or, perhaps you need to unite a global cadre of managers in a cost-effective virtual world. Or, your executive team needs a fast-paced, intensive refresher that will revitalize your company’s strategic focus. You choose the program that works best for your company.

The Virtual Program:

An online program that brings your far-flung management team together in a dynamic learning environment. It blends webinars, eLearning modules, strategic use of the DECIDE simulation platform, team and individual case analysis, and online feedback.  It replaces passive learning with effective eLearning based on the Thiagi 4-Door™ learning platform, which includes a Library, Cafe, Playground & Assessment Center. The virtual program is designed to enhance participants’ business skills while avoiding travel expenses and opportunity costs associated with team members being away from work. What sets this program apart is the depth and vitality of the learning experience. Multi-media resources allow the introduction of more content than is typically covered in conventional workshops.  Participants can review and master content before using it, providing a richer and deeper learning experience. At the same time, participants benefit from real-time sessions with team members and facilitators.

The program requires about 24 to 30 hours of individual and team work over approximately 4 weeks. It is designed for high potential and mid-level managers with diverse backgrounds (i.e. engineering, R&D, sales, human resources, marketing, and finance) as well as individual contributors who need to improve business skills and cross-functional awareness. Elements include:

  • Two 45-minute webinars: An introductory session pulls participants together, introduces the teams, and walks members through the simulation support system. A concluding session involves client senior management and summarizes and debriefs learning.

  • Online discussions, feedback, and chat sessions to enhance the learning experience.

  • In depth learning with multiple linked modules covering topics such as:

    • Cash flow, free cash flow, net present value, and economic profit

    • Cost fundamentals, mini business cases covering relevant cost and opportunity cost, and capital budgeting analysis

    • Business planning basics. A Balanced Scorecard approach to making the business plan, and Agile decision making

    • Multiple examples of the DuPont Model for business analysis and improved decision making

The Blended Program:

Designed for motivated upper-level managers and experienced and high-potential independent contributors, this challenging program includes an intensive 2-day on-site program as well as 4 hours of individual online pre work and 4 hours of online post work. It furthers upper-level managers’ cross-functional and strategic development. Senior management often finds the program reinvigorates their management team and revives a strategic vision that may have become fragmented. Elements include:

  • A fast-paced review of business fundamentals, including the Three Bottom Lines, systems thinking, and the upside and downside of business planning

  • Access to eLearning resources to support efficient review and learning

  • Strategies for addressing the challenges associated with implementing a business plan

  • Identification of the drivers of business success

  • Analysis of the critical role that correctly identifies “cost” plays in business decision making

  • Decision making in challenging business environments via DECIDE

  • Review and critique of simulation game play by the sponsor’s executive team

The Traditional Program:

A concentrated 3-day program designed for mid-level managers and high-potential independent contributors. It is ideal for organizations that can bring select participants to one site for 3 days of intensive training and is often used as a capstone to company management development programs. Some of the benefits of this format include:

  • It offers an effective way to forge partnerships among managers from varied divisions

  • It fosters a deep appreciation for cross-functional planning and adherence to a strategic plan

  • It fills educational gaps among mid-level managers and specialists and advances their facility with analytical tools that support better business decisions

Elements include:

  • Planning, understanding financial data, identifying relevant business costs, and understanding the role of a strategic plan, along with multiple layers of cross-functional analysis.

  • Functional specialists – from production, sales, engineering, human resources, marketing, etc. – learn to think like general managers.

  • Access to appropriate eLearning resources to facilitate learning

  • Business cases customized to fit the organization’s needs

  • On-site team building and an opportunity for review and critique of simulation game play by upper management
