What are Creativity Games?
These games are playful techniques for solving problems and utilizing
opportunities in any situation. Here are some special features of
creativity games: They provide a structure for individual and team work
through different steps in the creativity process.
- They can be modified to suit your needs and constraints.
- They can be speeded up, slowed down, or divided into phases to suit
your schedule.
- They can be adapted to focus on specific steps in the creativity
process.
- They can be combined to structure a creativity project from the
beginning to the end.
What does this booklet contain?
The booklet presents 5 games, explained using the same structured-text
format:
- How many players, how much time, and what supplies are required for
playing the game?
- What step in the creativity process does the game focus on and what
do the players achieve at the end of the game?
- How do you prepare and conduct the game?
- How do you adjust the game to accommodate your needs and constraints?
- How do you use the structure of the game to design other useful
games?
- How do you combine this game with the others?
What games does this booklet include?
- THE MOST . . . is a lecture game that combines the efficiency and
control of a lecture with the interactivity and playfulness of games. It
is an effective introduction to the creativity process.
- GOALS, FACTS, AND IDEAS capitalizes on the way your brain functions
during a creative frenzy, hopping from one stream of thoughts to
another. The players produce a large number of high-quality ideas.
- CREATIVE CARDS begins with anonymous suggestions from individuals and
ends with joint decisions from teams. It can be used for different
purposes such as selecting problems, pinpointing root causes, and
defining goals.
- CREATIVE ENVELOPES encourages teams to produce different ideas on the
same topic and to evaluate them. It can be used to generate different
items such as useful questions, practical ideas, appropriate metaphors,
and improved suggestions.
- CREATIVE DIVERSITY encourages the use of alternative techniques by
reorganizing homogeneous teams into diverse teams. It can be used for
different purposes, such as converging toward a common goal, approaching
the same outcome from different roles, and creating a single action plan
from multiple inputs.
What are the requirements for playing the games?
Number of players. Any number can play these games,
ranging from solitaire play with individuals to team play with large
groups.
Time. Most of these games can be played in 30 minutes
to 1 hour. Suggestions for speeding up or slowing down each game are also
provided.
Supplies. You will have no difficulty finding play
materials such as index cards, envelopes, paper, and pencils. Flip charts
will be useful, but are not absolutely necessary.
Handouts. Reproducible pages for job aids and rating
sheets are included in this booklet
